2020-2021 Subscription review: An update from Associate Dean of University Libraries for Collections and Content

Subscription review: An update from Associate Dean of University Libraries for Collections and Content
DATE
Given the pre-COVID budget shortfall and a 4.6% budget reduction to UW Libraries, we have been actively reviewing subscriptions in response to the 2020-2021 fiscal year budget allocations. At this time, the Libraries has the ability to cover most of the budget reductions by using one-time endowment funds; however in order to meet the difference, we have an initial cancellation target of $125,000 in database and e-journal subscriptions for this fiscal year 2020-2021.
With the intention to be transparent with our budget and decision-making process, we are posting a list of planned cancellations at Research Guides: Database Subscription Review 2020-2021.  When we evaluate subscriptions for renewal or cancellation, we consider factors such as price, overlap with other resources in content and use, and usage of the resource. Please note that subscriptions to AP Newsroom, Bibliography of Linguistic Literature, and Scopus will expire January 1, 2021.
The Faculty Council of University Libraries will meet on December 9th to further review and discuss the current subscription review and cancellation plan.
In anticipation of a flat or decreased budget for next fiscal year 2021-2022, we are beginning planning for a secondary subscription review for the Spring 2021. We will continue to share subscription review plans with the FCUL and update the database subscription review web page as new information is confirmed.
