From the Vice Provost and Dean - November 2019

Dear Friends,

The University of Washington Libraries’ Special Collections is home to the only active moving image archive and preservation program in the state of Washington. This incredible program is also the home of the KIRO TV collection — the largest and most complete of its kind in our region.

On Wednesday, December 4, Moving Image Curator Hannah Palin will provide a rare glimpse into this archive — a collection of more than 15,000 videos that allow us to observe history over time from a uniquely local perspective. From exclusive footage of 1950s news, to special programming like never-aired footage of local celebrity J.P. Patches, Hannah will highlight some of the most entertaining and historically significant moments that live only within this collection. A highly valued resource for documentarians, researchers and current media outlets worldwide, we are proud stewards of this incredible archive.

Hannah is the driving force behind our award-winning moving image preservation program. Not only is she a valued expert at UW, working with faculty and students on projects ranging from Frank Boas films owned by the Burke Museum to recordings of early Husky football games, she is a community advocate for film preservation. With the Moving Image Preservation of Puget Sound, she organizes events and leads workshops to share her knowledge of film and help preserve audiovisual heritage across the Pacific Northwest.

With Hannah’s passion, expertise, and the treasures in the KIRO TV collection, we are all in for a treat at the KIRO TV Movie Night. I hope to see you there!
