Working under the general co-supervision of the Education and Research Help Librarian and the First Year Experience Librarian, UW Tacoma Library Student Reference Specialists will be responsible for providing multi-modal research help and instruction to help library users to navigate the information landscape. Additionally, they will work under the guidance of librarians on special projects throughout the Library.

The goal of the position is for Student Reference Specialists to feel confident in their capacity as information professionals with marketable skills and demonstrable leadership experience; that is, Reference Specialists will, over time, grow out of this role and be ready for professional positions.

Special projects may include:

  • Updating or developing subject or class guides
  • Conducting library orientation sessions
  • Assisting librarians with classroom instruction
  • Developing library exhibits
  • Supporting the Library's programs and services for digital scholarship and scholarly communications
  • Collaborating with librarians and staff on other projects as available: this could include collections, instruction, marketing, programming, and other library-related activities.

    Required Qualifications:

      • Bachelor's degree
      • Commitment to improving communication, listening, and interpersonal skills
      • Excitement for teaching and learning
      • Ability to work independently and in a collaborative team environment
      • A growth mindset in a changing environment and commitment to equitable access
      • Ability to learn new technologies quickly

        Desired Qualifications:

            • Enrollment in the UW Information School, either on-line or in-person modes
            • Experience providing customer/public service support in person or online
            • Experience in one-on-one instruction or classroom teaching, or a strong desire to learn
            • Interest in education-centered reference work
            • Interest in social justice work
            • Interest in oral history, digital scholarship, open access, or scholarly communications

                Other Details:

                This position will be considered hybrid, consisting of some in-person hours, and some remote work. Applicants should be able to be in person on the Tacoma campus 1-2 times a week, exact schedules can be negotiated.
