Subscription Review Update 3/11: Principles and Rubrics for Subscription Review

March 11, 2021

Due to a pre-COVID shortfall in the 2019-2021 biennial budget to cover the cost of inflation and in preparation for the possibility of a flat or decreased budget for collections on the Seattle Campus for next fiscal year 2021-2022, the Libraries has shared principles for subscription review (January update) and our cancellation target (February update). The principles provide greater transparency about our intentions, creates an initial framework for decision-making, and identifies actions aligned to values. Recent conversations with the Faculty Council on University Libraries (FCUL) have focused on ways we can engage in substantive and collaborative discussions with the UW faculty, staff, and students. In response, we have embedded a rubric structure with our principles for subscription review. The Libraries Principles and Rubric for Subscription Review is intended to help maintain consistency and fairness in the review process, and cultivate collaboration in alignment with the Libraries mission, vision, and values. Lists of proposed cancellations and a feedback form will be presented at the next FCUL meeting scheduled for April 14 and posted to the Subscription Review web page.

If you have specific questions about this process, we encourage you to reach out to FCUL voting faculty, or your Libraries Subject Librarian.
