Area Specification and Description, Equipment and Hours

  1. The Research Commons is a research and learning space that measures 15,000 square feet and features collaborative study areas, as well as space for presentations and programming.
  2. The area of the foyer/lobby is available for displaying exhibits. It measures 19’10” x 31’3”.
    1. The Research Commons does not provide display cases but may borrow cases from other Libraries units, at our discretion for exhibitions.
  3. Three walls in the Research Commons feature an Arakawa rail/hook picture hanging system that are available for exhibits. Dimensions are:
    1. 1 green wall around 20' long that can hold up to 5 framed or foamcore 24" mounted images.
    2. 1 yellow wall around 39' long that can hold up to 8-9 framed or foamcore 24" wide mounted images.
    3. 1 red wall around 11' long that can hold 3 framed or foamcore mounted 24" wide mounted images.
  4. Operating hours for exhibitions are the same as the operating hours for the Research Commons.

Exhibition Policy

Exhibit space in the Research Commons is primarily intended for the display of University of Washington student, faculty and librarian research, and should fit within the overall mission and scope of the Research Commons. For more information, please visit What is the Research Commons?

Special Conditions

  • Any required funding for an exhibit (including shipping, installation, and surrounding events) must be in place before making a request to schedule the exhibit space.
  • No climate control is provided.
  • No adhesives allowed on case walls, glass doors, or on exhibit supports.
  • The Libraries takes no responsibility for the security or welfare of exhibits at any time, including during transport, installation, or dismantling. Before an exhibit is installed, exhibitors must sign an Exhibit Release Form indemnifying the UW from any responsibility for loss or damage.

Exhibit Proposal Process and Forms

Process of proposing an exhibit in the Research Commons:
  1. Exhibitor reads Exhibition Policy for the Research Commons in Allen Library.
  2. Exhibitor completes Exhibit Proposal Form online, prints, signs, and sends copy of the proposal to the contact at the Research Commons listed in the Exhibition Policy.
  3. Libraries contact for the exhibit location approves or rejects proposal in a timely manner, based on the Criteria for Selection outlined in the Exhibition Policy for the Research Commons and/or schedule. Exhibitor is contacted with result.
  4. At exhibit installation, the Exhibit Release Form is signed by the Libraries exhibitor, sponsor, and contact.
  5. Exhibit Proposal and Exhibit Release forms are retained in the approving department’s files.
