From the Vice Provost and Dean

December 2018

Hello Friends,

I bring you the warmest greetings in this holiday season. As we welcome the New Year, I invite you to join the Libraries for two special events that deepen our understanding of social justice and the public good.

Sunday, January 13, we partner with UW American Ethnic Studies as a co-sponsor in a screening of Houses for Peace: Exploring the Legacy of Floyd Schmoe in Kane Hall. NHK World has produced a documentary on Quaker and pacifist Floyd Schmoe (1895-2001), who led a group of volunteers from the US and Japan to build 21 homes for atomic bomb survivors and their families in Hiroshima.

On January 24, Kit Bakke delivers the Friends of the Libraries Annual Lecture on her book, Protest on Trial: The Seattle 7 Conspiracy. Kit has been an activist all her life, is a retired pediatric oncology nurse, participated in anti-war and civil right demonstrations, was jailed in Chicago, was part of the Weather Underground, and has an extensive FBI file.

Both events are tied to Libraries Special Collections, where we house the Floyd Schmoe archives and, now, Kit Bakke’s FBI file.

These very human stories, created by connecting the past to the present through archival research and personal narrative, are at the heart of our mission of “connecting people with knowledge.”

I hope to see you at these events, or exhibits on campus.
