Moore & Sloan Foundation Data Science Environment Project
Website: Moore & Sloan Foundation Data Science Environment Project
Project Synopsis
This is a 5-year partnership with UC Berkeley, NYU, with $37.8 million in funding from the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, and the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation to build a distributed Data Science Environment to advance data science research and practice across all disciplines. At the UW, the grant has been used to: fund new research positions, including data scientists who specialize in software and work with researchers across campus; postdoctoral data science fellows pursuing interdisciplinary research agendas; and partially funded research scientists stationed in other departments and centers. A dedicated Data Science Studio on campus has meeting areas and drop-in workspaces to encourage collaboration across the UW's colleges and schools. One of the goals is to support new career paths that allow experts in data science the freedom to remain in academia and apply their skills to the most important problems in data-intensive research.
People Involved
- UW eScience Institute
- Representatives from 44 departments across campus
Libraries Role
The Libraries has been involved in this project from the beginning, including participation in the grant proposal process. Many of the events associated with the Data Science Environment take place in the Data Science Studio, contributed by the Libraries.
- Jenny Muilenburg, Data Curriculum and Communications Librarian is a member of the Education Working Group
- Liz Bedford, Data Services Project Librarian is a member of the leadership team for the Reproducibility & Open Science Working Group
Members of the Libraries Research Data Services unit hold studio hours in the Data Science Studio.
