John Muir

This image was designed and printed on a 19th century letterpress using hand-set metal types and original linocut by Jules Remedios Faye under the sign of the Street of Crocodiles. The image was commissioned by the Special Collections and Preservation Division of the University of Washington Libraries for its 1996 New Year's card. The quote was originally attributed to John Muir; however, a very similar version is found in Charles Caleb Colton's (1780-1832) work Lacon, Or, Many Things in a Few Words: Addressed to Those who Think (1824). ("I have somewhere seen it observed that we should make the same use of a book, as a bee does of a flower; she steals sweets from it, but does not injure it.")
